Lunch Time!!!

Reading Lights Journal: 17 February 2010

Don't be surprise if sometimes you come to visit us and you found us eating together at one of our table. It has became our habit to eat lunch together. Sometimes we buy our own meals but some other times we collect our money and cook our own meals (to be precise, our chef cooked it ^_^).
On this day we prepared our own lunch. Dedi our assistant chef is the one who cooked us the meals with Ponpon's help. Since both of them are the ones who have off-day on wednesday, they are the one who prepared everything. Starting from shopping until preparing it. Ponpon make the 'sambal' and dedi prepare the rice, it's 'nasi uduk'. They also fry the 'ikan asin' and tofu. The meals are so delicious through the last bite.
Having lunch time together brings us closer. We throw jokes on each other while having lunch (although probably you might witness us throwing jokes while working). We also share stories and sometimes come up with ideas to run the store on that time. This is one of many parts that make Reading Lights a great place to work, the feeling of having second family. We are like many other family, having lunch together and enjoying everybody company. Just like many other family out there.

Top 10 Books of All Time

What a great advantage we can get from reading books, many writes have make their books, and some of those we have read it. Among of those books, there are the best of the best. This is a list of the top 10 fictional books of all time – needless to say, if you have not read these books, you probably should.

10. Middlemarch George Eliot

Middlemarch

Middlemarch is considered by many scholars to be one of the most important novels of the Victorian era. It was written by George Eliot (pen name of Mary Anne Evans) and was first published in 1871 to 1872. It is set in the 1830s in Middlemarch, a fictional provincial town in England, based on Coventry.

9. The Stories of Anton Chekhov Anton Chekhov

Cover

Anton Chekhov was a Russian short story writer and playwright. He was born in Taganrog, southern Russia, on 29 January 1860. His originality consists in an early use of the stream-of-consciousness technique, later employed by Virginia Woolf and other modernists, combined with a disavowal of the moral finality of traditional story structure.

8. In Search of Lost Time Marcel Proust

C14216

I appreciate the great artistic merit in Proust’s writing, but I have to be honest and say that I have never managed to get more than half way through the first book of this multiple-book novel. I found it extremely slow paced and boring. This is Proust’s most prominent work, it is popularly known for its extended length and the notion of involuntary memory, the most famous example being the “episode of the madeleine” in which he describes in great (boring) detail, eating a madeleine dipped in tea.

7. The Great Gatsby F. Scott Fitzgerald

Im

I agree with the inclusion of this book – it is one of my favorites and one of the best examples of Fitzgerald’s writing. The Great Gatsby is a tale from the Jazz age of Gatsby – a wealthy man whose life is surrounded by mystery. A brilliant read.

6. Hamlet William Shakespeare

Hamlet-V2-Poster

It is no surprise that Mr Shakespeare is on the list. I am not sure that I would have picked Hamlet as his best book, but who am I to debate 125 brilliant authors? Hamlet is a tragedy by William Shakespeare, probably written between 1599 and 1601. The play, set in Denmark, recounts how Prince Hamlet exacts revenge on his uncle for murdering Hamlet’s father, the King, gaining the throne through this treachery, and subsequently marrying his mother.

5. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Mark Twain

Huckleberry Finn Pix

It is good to see such a great book for the younger generation on the list. Huckleberry Finn is commonly accounted as one of the first Great American Novels. It is also one of the first major American novels ever written using Local Color Regionalism, or vernacular, told in the first person by the eponymous Huckleberry “Huck” Finn, best friend of Tom Sawyer (hero of three other Mark Twainbooks).

4. Lolita Vladimir Nabokov

Lolita

Lolita was first written in English and published in 1955 in Paris. The novel is both internationally famous for its innovative style and infamous for its controversial subject: the book’s narrator and protagonist Humbert Humbert becoming sexually obsessed with a twelve-year-old girl named Dolores Haze.

3. War and Peace Leo Tolstoy

Warandpeace

War and Peace was first published from 1865 to 1869 in Russkii Vestnik, which tells the story of Russian society during the Napoleonic Era. It is usually described as one of Tolstoy’s two major masterpieces (the other being Anna Karenina) as well as one of the world’s greatest novels.

2. Madame Bovary Gustave Flaubert

Madame Bovary Fronte

Madame Bovary was attacked for obscenity by public prosecutors when it was first serialised in La Revue de Paris between 1 October 1856 and 15 December 1856, resulting in a trial in January 1857 that made it notorious. The novel focuses on a doctor’s wife, Emma Bovary, who has adulterous affairs and lives beyond her means in order to escape the banalities and emptiness of provincial life. Though the basic plot is rather simple, even archetypal, the novel’s true art lies in its details and hidden patterns.

1. Anna Karenina Leo Tolstoy

Pevear Karenina

Anna Karenina is widely regarded as a pinnacle in realist fiction, Tolstoy considered this book his first true novel. Although most Russian critics panned the novel on its publication as a “trifling romance of high life,” Fyodor Dostoevsky declared it to be “flawless as a work of art.” Tolstoy’s style in Anna Karenina is considered by many critics to be transitional, forming a bridge between the realist and modernist novel.

Afterword

Obviously a list of this type is very subjective and it is likely to cause discomfort to many people. We are priveleged on this site to have such a great variety of generally very smart readers. I am very interested to know what your top 10 – or even your number 1 –books are. Do you agree with this list? If not, tell us who should be here and tell us why they should be here.

Finding Treasures in Bandung's Used Bookstores

Juliana Harsianti , Contributor , Bandung | Mon, 03/31/2008 12:12 AM | Potpourri

After listening to my friend Naomi talk about a secondhand bookstore she happened upon in Siliwangi, Bandung, I was curious to know more.

Naomi said from the very moment she pushed the door open and walked inside, she felt a great calm wash over her as she entered a room dominated by cream and brown colors, with jazz music softly playing in the background. She was instantly drawn to the bookshelves; the books seemed to be calling her to come hither. In this space, Naomi became oblivious to time.

Reading Lights is the name of the secondhand bookshop that Naomi was speaking of.

Regular visitors to this bookshop stop by several times a week to enjoy the atmosphere and indulge themselves in the hundreds of books on display.

The books are arranged by genre: romance novels, literary works, biographies, books on social problems, magazines and children books. All the books, despite being secondhand, are clean and have been placed in covers. People spend hours here browsing for literary treasures.

Naomi, much to her delight, stumbled across In Cold Blood by Truman Capote on one visit to the store, a book she had been looking for for quite a long time.

Meanwhile, her friend found The French Lieutenant's Woman at the same shop after almost giving up searching for it at other bookstores.

Antoni, who helps manage Reading Lights, said the bookshop once sold a first edition copy of Seven Years in Tibet and a bundle of British Punch magazines from the 1800s*

After hunting for books at Reading Lights, there's no need to go home just yet. A visit to another secondhand book store at a shop-house on Jl. Ciumbuleuit can uncover more gems.

Directly in front of Parahyangan University campus and on the second floor above Circle K, you will find Omunium.

While the interior of the Reading Lights shop is dominated by neutral colors, the interior of Omunium is dominated by black, offering an almost Gothic atmosphere.

However, for comic lovers and those in the architectural and interior design fields, this place is a haven where hundreds of comics and books on the two fields can be found.

Adi, a graphic designer from Bandung, said he was able to complete his Tintin and Lucky LukeSuperman and Batman comics. comic collections by rummaging through the comics for sale at Omunium. It is also here that Adi found first and special editions of

Iit Sukmawati, the manager of Omunium, originally only wanted to run a shop that sold ordinary used books. She never thought of specializing in selling comics and books on interior design.

"The places where I hunted for used books happened to offer me comics and interior design books," she said.

Visitors to Omunium and Reading Lights can find books that may no longer be sold in other bookstores or markets, and books from their childhoods that they can share with their children or keep as mementos.

Both Antoni and Iit say they set up their bookshops out of a love for books.

"At first I only wanted to share with other people the books that I had read and that had created a special memory for me," said Iit.

"Many people have asked me if I regret selling all the books in my collection. I may have regretted selling some, but the pay-off (for me) is when I see people's happy faces upon finding a book they have been searching for," she said.

Many people come to these two bookshops not only because they sell unique books but also because the prices of the books are relatively inexpensive. Foreign novels, for example, are priced between Rp 35,000 and Rp 45,000 at Reading Lights, while books on architecture and interior design are available for between Rp 150,000 and Rp 200,000 at Omunium.

Reading Lights provides comfortable surroundings for its visitors, who can enjoy reading a book while sitting on a sofa or on benches in the store. Thirsty customers can order beverages like tea or coffee and snacks. Reading Lights even sells beverages with unique names that relate to books, such as a "Orhan Pamuk" coffee or a "Hansel and Gretel" tea.

At Omunium, where many visitors are university students, a large carpet with pillows dominates the center of the main room. Visitors can read, relax and exchange stories there over an iced drink.

Omunium and Reading Lights are not only places where people can hunt for used books; they are also places where people can escape from their daily routines.

"Quite a lot of people initially come here only to drink coffee and read books ... but later they become interested in buying the books available here," said Antoni.

This is indeed the hope of Antoni and Iit; that one does not have to spend a lot of money to enjoy books. In addition, they say, reading a used book also allows the reader to share a memory with the book's previous owner. This is exactly the philosophy of these two bookstores.

Making a great cup of coffee-by chillipaper

Although there are differences of opinion as to how long it takes for
coffee to lose its flavor, everyone agrees that it does.

We believe that fresh beans, if properly stored, will last up to 3
weeks and retain most of their fresh roasted flavor. On the other hand, ground coffee, once open from a can or vacuum pack, will last only about a week before it loses its fresh flavor. It's just plain and simple, whole beans stay fresher longer.

The question always comes up - How do you store your coffee? In the freezer? In the refrigerator? In the sock drawer?

We wish we could tell you, but no one seems to agree on this one (although the fridges have the freezers out numbered 2 to 1). Common sense tells us air-tight and out of the light is very important.

We suggest keeping your fresh coffee beans in the air-tight, tin tie
bag that they came in. After each use, roll down the bag as much as possible to minimize the amount of air in the bag and put it in the cupboard by the coffee grinder/maker.

Keep it simple.

When you grind your own beans, you are treating yourself to one of life's simple, little, inexpensive, and wholesome pleasures.

The type of coffee maker you use should determine the length of time
that the coffee is in the grinder. Less time in the grinder means
a "coarser" ground coffee. If the grind isn't right for your type of
maker, it won't make coffee that tastes like it should. In some cases,
the maker may even become clogged.

For normal drip makers (the kind most people have), do a medium grind of about 15 to 20 seconds.Gently shake the grinder a few times to make sure all the beans get ground.

For espresso machines the grind should be between a medium and fine grind, or 20 to 25 seconds in the grinder.Too long and it may get clogged, to short and the espresso will be watery and weak.

The best grind for coffee makers with a cone filter is a fine grind. Grind the coffee for at least 25 to 30 seconds. A fine grind is also used on vacuum pot coffee makers.

If you have a plunger pot or a bistro, grind the coffee for approximately 10 to 12 seconds for a coarse grind.

Great coffee starts with great water. Use fresh, cold water. If your tap water doesn't taste good, don't use it. Use bottled or spring or filtered water (not distilled water).

Just as important as the water is the coffee. It has to be fresh and it has to be stored properly. Grind only what you need for the coffee you are about to make. Make sure that the coffee pot, filter holder or whatever it is you are using to brew your coffee is clean and rinsed well.

How much coffee is a matter of taste. Start with 2 level tablespoons for each eight ounces of water and go from there. (If you really like strong coffee, start with 2 tablespoons). If you really don't want to mess with measuring, you may want to try what we do. We simply fill the grinder to the top of the metal basin and the ground coffee that results is perfect for a 10 "cup" drip maker.

After brewing, always remove the grounds immediately to keep the next pot from tasting bitter. Serve the coffee as soon as it brews. If you
plan on having more later, pour the coffee into a vacuum bottle to keep the fresh taste. Coffee that sits on a warmer will soon become stale and bitter.
